Sophie Riga de Spinoza
Dip Psychology, PG Cert Psychotherapy & Counselling, MA Music Therapy, Dip Creative Arts Supervision Training, Cert Supported Music & Imagery (currently in training). Member of British Association for Music Therapy
Having originally trained as an Integrative Psychotherapist, I went on to qualify as a Music Therapist in 2010. Since then, much of my work has been in the education sector, mainly specialising in children with learning disabilities, as well as sibling and family work. I also have a special interest in bereavement, using music as part of a wider creative arts method of support. I am a Visiting Lecturer on the MA Music Therapy course at Roehampton University.
I take a client-centred approach in my work and draw on a wide range of musical tools; from listening together to music, through to free-improvisation and collaborative song-writing. Using music in this way enables clients to create their own unique musical language in which to explore and express their inner-world as well as to connect with others.
I am currently training in Supportive Music and Imagery (SMI). This is a short-term evidence-based method that focuses on the individual’s emotional well-being and resilience. It can be especially useful for those who have experienced trauma, as the internalised supportive resources developed through SMI can help find the emotional regulation and safety needed to begin the process of addressing trauma without feeling overwhelmed.
In my spare time I love to play – piano, clarinet, saxophone (very badly) and guitar. I am part of various instrumental groups, and I am currently trying to set up a local choir!
